First Cybersecurity Homelab

Project Overview

Building my first cybersecurity homelab using virtual machines and Raspberry Pi. The goal of this project is to simulate different types of I.T. infrastructure, along with attacking and defending scenarios.

Hardware

  • An old laptop, in which I will wipe the hard drive and use an Ubuntu VM as the priority boot. This will be the “main PC” where I will install a hypervisor like VMware.
  • Raspberry Pi, where I can host a DNS server using PI Hole and Unbound
  • An ethernet hub to connect all devices

Learning Goals

  • The main goal from this project is to learn to configure, manage, and simulate various types of network and system administration including Active Directory, Remote Desktop Protocol, DNS and VPN servers, SIEM, and virtual workstations.
  • To understand the process of installing, configuring, and optimizing I.T. infrastructure at a relatively small scale so I can apply similar processes to a real-world business or enterprise network.
